Virgin America will officially move into Dallas Love Field on Oct. 13, the city of Dallas and the airline announced Monday.
Dallas City Manager A.C. Gonzalez gave the final go-ahead for Virgin America to use the two gates at after receiving direction from the City Council behind closed doorson May 7.
Virgin America announced two weeks ago that it had reached an agreement with the federal government and American Airlines, who owns the gates and will sublease them to Virgin. Tickets went on sale April 25 to New York's LaGuardia Airport, ReaganNational Airport, Los Angeles International Airport and San Francisco International Airport.
That's 14 roundtrips daily starting in October that will expand to 16 in early 2015. Virgin will add Chicago O'Hare in early 2015, too. Virgin will offer three classes of service, something that's not currently offered at Dallas Love Field.
"We are pleased to have the opportunity to bring new competition to Love Field, an important airport for travelers because of its proximity to the city's central business district," said David Cush CEO of Virgin America.
Cush said previously that Virgin America would stop serving D/FW Airport on Oct. 12.
The three-way fight for the gates at Love Field came down to Virgin America, Dallas-basedSouthwest Airline (NYSE: LUV) and Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL).
The city of Dallas said it wasn't a competition and that it was presented with the sub-lease for Virgin America.
Dallas added language to the sub-lease that requires Virgin to follow the city's noise abatement program while clarifying how unused gate space could be accessible to other airlines.
