Boeing's re-engined 737 MAX has topped 2,000 orders faster than any previous Boeing airplane, the company announced Tuesday. Airbus' competing A320neo still has more orders.
With the addition orders for 30 airplanes from an unidentified customer or customers this week, Boeing now has orders for 2,010 737 MAX jets from 39 customers. The orders are worth $209 billion at list prices, although customers get substantial discounts. Boeing has commitments for more than 250 additional 737 MAXes.
"Two thousand orders at this stage in the program is a remarkable achievement," Keith Leverkuhn, vice president and general manager of the 737 MAX Program, said in a news release. "Since its first order, the 737 MAX has received more than 50 percent of the new orders versus its direct competition, proving the value this airplane offers to our customers."
Boeing launched the 737 MAX, rather than an all-new single-aisle airliner, in 2011, after Airbus' racked up commitments for more than 1,000 re-engined A320neos. As of last month, Airbus reported 2,645 firm A320neo orders from 50 customers.
Boeing says the 737 MAX will be 14 percent more fuel-efficient than current Next-Generation 737s and more efficient than the A320neo, with an 8 percent operating cost per seat edge over the competing jet (Airbus disputes that).
Boeing is scheduled to start final assembly of the first 737 MAX in mid-2015, fly the jet in 2016 and deliver it to launch customer Southwest Airlines in the third quarter of 2017.
