Private jets flying in to LVIA for the Super Bowl

While crews work to clear the field for the Super Bowl, Lehigh Valley International Airport is working with the FAA to make it clear this is the place for planes flying in for the big game. More than a thousand private jets are expected to fly in for the Super Bowl. The coveted spot is New Jersey's Teterboro Airport. It's three miles from Met Life Stadium, but it has only 600 spaces. Planes are now being pushed to surrounding airfields, creating a competitive game of "catch a plane if you can" for local airports. "Our approach was not to charge extra. We are going to go with existing rates. We are aware the New York and New Jersey area will be charging additional fees. We want to keep things as low as possible and just provide the service," LVIA head Charles Everett said. 

As of now, seven such planes have made reservations at LVIA. Dean Browning, who runs an air charter company at the airport and sits on the Airport Authority Board, says 40 to 50 private jets could come. "These are going to be Gulfstreams, Learjets and charter planes people are using to fly in from Seattle and Denver, " he said. LVIA says anything over 20 planes would be considered a big win. But even with a big influx, tourism officials here in the Lehigh Valley do not expect the Super Bowl to be anything extra super to the overall local economy. Copyright 2014 WFMZ. All rights reserved.
