Um pouco antes da aterrissagem, o piloto foi ao banheiro e a porta do compartimento travou, e para alertar os tripulantes da situação, ele começou a golpeá-la.
Um passageiro das primeiras filas percebeu o que estava acontecendo e se dirigiu até a cabine de comando para avisar o copiloto, com quem tentou se comunicar através da porta, que estava fechada.
O copiloto, sem entender direito o que acontecia, assustou-se e contatou a torre de controle do aeroporto La Guardia, em Nova York, e informou que o piloto havia sumido. "Ele desapareceu. Tenho alguém com um forte sotaque estrangeiro tentando entrar na cabine", disse.
"O capitão desapareceu quando foi usar o banheiro. Me disseram que foi trancado quando estava no local e agora uma pessoa quer entrar na cabine, mas não vou permitir", acrescentou o copiloto.
Os controladores decidiram então permitir que o avião fizesse uma aterrissagem de emergência. Mas logo em seguida, o piloto conseguiu sair do banheiro e reapareceu na cabine.
"Não há problema, não há ameaça terrorista", esclareceu o capitão à torre de controle.
Segundo a cadeia ABC, alguns caças de guerra já tinham sido alertados. O voo pousou sem problemas em Nova York e após uma reunião entre o FBI, a polícia e autoridades aeroportuárias, foi concluído que tudo não passou de um mal-entendido.

The aircraft entered a 360, the first officer talked to dispatch, upon returning on frequency he reported the captain was going to take a break at the bathroom but apparently got stuck inside the lavatory, someone with a big foreign accent was attempting a password access to the cockpit but the first officer won't let him in. About 5 minutes after reporting the captain had disappeared in the back the first officer reported "situation resolved" adding the captain had been trapped in the lavatory when the door didn't open and the door had to be forced open. The captain was back in the cockpit. The aircraft landed safely on La Guardia's runway 04 about 18 minutes after the captain was reported disappeared.
The captain had asked a passenger to relay the message, he was locked into the lavatory, to the cockpit and had provided the passenger with the code to open the cockpit door.
The aircraft was able to depart for its next flight about 3.5 hours after landing.
