Turbulência em um voo da American Airlines do Brasil para Miami, confirmou uma porta-voz no aeroporto
O voo 980 da empresa aérea, que decolou do Aeroporto de Recife por volta do meio-dia e meia deste domingo, aparentemente encontrou turbulência na sua vinda para o Aeroporto Internacional de Miami, disse a porta-voz do aeroporto, Maria Levrant. O avião pousou no MIA pouco depois das 6h30 da tarde deste domingo, trazendo a bordo 136 passageiros e nove tripulantes.
Gillas Correa, que estava a bordo, disse ter sentido uma queda abrupta. "Havia muitas pessoas gritando e chorando, contou Correa. Havia uma mulher sentada numa poltrona dupla atrás de nós, que foi jogada para o alto e caiu no corredor do avião", completou
"Mas eles deram sorte", comentou Correa, "porque um dos passageiros que estava na porta de emergência era um médico que ajudou a tratar os ferimentos enquanto eles estavam voando".
Seis tripulantes ficaram feridos devido à turbulência, disse Levrant. Dos seis, um foi tratado no aeroporto e cinco foram hospitalizados. Um foi levado para o Metropolitan Hospital of Miami, enquanto os outros quatro foram transportados para o Jackson Memorial Hospital.

American Airlines Boeing 757-200, registration N185AN performing flight AA-980 from Recife,PE (Brazil) to Miami,FL (USA) with 136 passengers and 9 crew, was enroute along Brazil's Northeast coast about 2 hours into the flight (around 17:30Z) when the aircraft encountered severe turbulence causing injuries to a number of flight attendants. The flight crew continued the flight to Miami where the aircraft landed safely about 6 hours later with ambulances awaiting the aircraft.

Passengers reported the aircraft was about 2 hours into the flight when the aircraft unexpectedly encountered a serious bump that felt like a large drop causing people who had not fastened their seat belts to impact the cabin ceiling including a number of passengers. One flight attendant moving a food cart along the aisle was lifted against the cabin ceiling together with her cart, she caused a large hole in the ceiling on impact, and when she came down the cart fell on her. It appeared however only flight attendants received injuries. A doctor amongst the passengers took care of the injured.
